One of the popular attractions located in Hollywood is The Hollywood Walk of Fame. Joanne Woodward (an Academy Award winning actress) received the first star placed on The Walk of Fame groundbreaking day -- February 9th, 1960. Oliver Weissmuller came up with the idea for The Walk of Fame in 1958, and today it is a well-known attraction, as well as a tribute to many stars of the Hollywood-based entertainment industry. This includes stars in radio, motion pictures, television, as well as in recording and live performances. Two thousand and five hundred blank stars were laid on the sidewalk (construction took about sixteen months to complete), and in 1994 there were already over two thousand stars claimed. Each month about one or two stars are added, so there are still many years left before The Hollywood Walk of Fame runs out of room for the stars of Hollywood. See if you can pay a visit to the star of your favourite Hollywood celebrity!
The Hollywood Sign is another popular attraction in Hollywood. This sign has been commonly used in images promoting California, as well as in movies and on postcards. Harry Chandler created the sign (which originally read HOLLYWOODLAND) in 1923, and it was meant to invite any new stars to the area. During the Great Depression the sign was neglected, so the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce took over and repaired the sign (as well as removed 'LAND' from the sign, leaving the 'HOLLYWOOD' we see today). In 1973 the sign was named an official historic monument, and standing over four stories high, you can be sure that it is a spectacular sight to see!
There are many additional attractions that are worth taking the time to visit in Hollywood including Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Universal Studios Hollywood, or the Hollywood & Highland Center. Hollywood, California also has some fabulous nightclubs and shopping opportunities, as well as many interesting museums. You might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of your favourite star!
